I am Responsible For How I Perceive the World

"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
The heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved: he uttered his voice, the earth melted.
Be still, and know that I am God." (Psalm 46: 1, 6, 10)

The other day, my mother's friend phoned her late at night in distress. Someone had broken into her flat and stolen her valuables. Mum said the neighbourhood wasn't safe after all. I disagreed with her. Everywhere is safe unless you think it isn't. Out of curiousity, I asked mum whether her friend had any spiritual beliefs. Mum said she is a born-again Christian. Interesting! How come she wasn't protected?

In Joel Goldsmith's book "Spiritual Healing," he cites a man who faithfully prays every morning and uses Psalm 91 before going out. He and his family are involved in a car accident. The man asks Goldsmith how the accident could have happened. Goldsmith asks him why he prays. It turns out the man has fearful thoughts about people, accidents and the likes, and that is exactly what he ends up creating.

The first line of Psalm 91 states:

"He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty."

I have used Psalm 91 in the past. I believe this Psalm is one way of acknowledging the power of Love to protect one from all manners of "evil" that mankind has dreamed up, and a reminder that Source is man's provider. The idea is to trust in this Infinite Power that is already within and without. If you go around thinking of people or circumstances as good or evil, you end up creating that reality.

I know for a fact that you can be in a war zone area and not be harmed, when you acknowledge only Love exists. I once read a story of a battalion during the second world war, I believe, who used Psalm 91 and not a single one was killed.

I have walked in areas very late at night that some people would consider unsafe, and I have had no fear because I know only Love is present.

While I acknowledge the presence of Love, I don't stipulate how this love should be experienced by others. If I see a couple having a row in the street, I'm not going to blast them with my "love" ray. (smile) At a human level, I don't know what is good for them or what love means for them. Every day, there are group meditations and prayers for world peace and I don't see lasting peace. I believe it is because people are trying to dictate what this peace should be. It's not up to me to decide what peace should be. All I can do is acknowledge Love (not the human idea of love) as the only Power, and trust in this Power.

In my opinion, principles mean nothing without practical application. The following happened last night.

I'm waiting for my bus home. Four young teenage boys appear. One asks a man whether a particular bus has arrived. It is the same bus I'm waiting for. A bus arrives but not the one they want. One boy goes through the back door and just as the bus is about to leave he jumps out. He does this several times. Another boy picks up a pebble and hurls it at a car across the road. I chuckle to myself. Looks like these kids are trying to express themselves the only way they know how. Next, they shout "abuse" and expletives at buses. Bless! Now they are experimenting with language! LOL!

Soon our bus arrives. I know they are going to sit upstairs. I'm staying downstairs, out of harm's way. (smile) I can hear them stamping their feet upstairs, banging on the windows and screaming at each other. Boys will be boys!

In the meantime, my bus driver is swerving all over the place. I keep sliding off my seat. I grab on to the nearest rail for dear life. I can't change the world but I can change my thoughts about the world. "Only One exists," I think to myself. In other words, there is no bus, passengers, earth, nothing but Infinite Love. Only One exists!

Someone else seems to be driving the bus now! It's a smooth ride all the way and not once do I slide out of my seat. Hello! What's going on upstairs? It's gone quiet all of a sudden! Have the boys got off the bus? We soon arrive at their bus stop. The boys descend the stairs quietly. They get off the bus and not a peep from them.

If I had gone around trying to create peace around me, I would have been imposing my idea of peace on others. I wasn't interested in changing people, I only wanted a ride where I wasn't tossed all over the place. My realisation of Oneness created a whole lot more.

I believe when someone acknowledges that there is only One Power, the Love Presence is animated. Individuals, who are open, feel and interpret this Love in a way that is appropriate for them.

It is not up to me to change the world. I am only responsible for the way I perceive the world.

I am Infinite Love,
