Then is Now and Now is Then

Last night I watched a documentary on Channel 4 called The Real Exorcist. It was about a boy who was believed to be possessed by the devil and was exorcised by two priests. Apparently, the movie The Exorcist was based on this event. The conclusion reached by one expert was that the drama of possession was one created by the boy and his family who already believed in spiritualism; and with the Catholic priests who believed in possession.

Next was an experiment called The Exorcism where Channel 4 arranged for someone to be exorcised live (at least earlier that evening). The guinea pig was a born-again Christian male who believed he was possessed by spirits which he wanted removed. The minister from the church the man attends did the exorcism, which he called "deliverance." During the deliverance, the minister cast out the "demons" in the name of Jesus. In the meantime, an expert analysed the man's brain waves on a computer to establish whether the deliverance had had any tangible effect.

There followed a debate between ministers from various Christian denominations and other religious leaders. They couldn't agree over whether the deliverance was an exorcism or whether there was any evidence that demons were cast out. The man on whom the exorcism was carried out described his inner state as peaceful. The scientist analysing his brain waves noticed a slight difference similar to when one is in the Alpha state, as experienced during meditation. Another expert thought the test was inconclusive.

One thing I found intriguing about both programmes was the notion of belief. You have to believe in possession in the first place for exorcism/deliverance to occur.

It is written in the bible that during Jesus' ministry, he cast out demons and he gave his disciples power to do the same.

"And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach, And to have power to heal sicknesses, and to cast out devils." (Mark 3: 14-15)
Jesus also made different promises to those who believed in him thus:

"And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover." (Mark 16: 17-18)
Now Christians take what Jesus said seriously. They believe that when one is born again, one is given authority to heal the sick and be healed. So it doesn't surprise me that in the Channel 4 programme, the minister believed he could cast out demons in the name of Jesus; and it is perfectly reasonable that the man believed he had been delivered from spirits.

I have watched hours of religious programmes and seen people who pray for others and they are healed all in the name of Jesus. I have no doubt about these healings. I think there is an important lesson one can learn from this: there is no time. You see when Jesus was speaking as the Christ - God in manifestation - it was the Christ that worked through him to do the works. This Christ doesn't change. Thus, someone who incarnates in the year 2500 that is Christ conscious will have access to the same Christ Mind. Even those who lived thousands of years before Jesus had access to the Christ Mind. Now, since the Christ doesn't change, the power that worked through Jesus 2,000 years ago are still relevant now.

In the same respect, humanity is still suffering from the same beliefs in sickness, lack and disharmony though the diseases have "evolved" and got new names.

How can one apply what happened 2,000 years ago now? Let us look at one example of healing in the bible. A man who couldn't walk was brought to Jesus for healing. Jesus told the man to get up from his bed/stretcher and walk. The man had faith and he was healed. (Mark 2: 3-12) Someone who has paralysis, for example, reading about this miracle can benefit in the same way from this miracle if he believes in the power of Christ. He can treat the words of Jesus as if they are being addressed to him right now and he will be healed. This is how many of Jesus' follower's channel healing by believing in the power of Jesus which is pertinent now and forever.

I believe God has always worked through various channels. I see this in operation in the Psalms. I believe God inspired the writer of Psalm 91 to remind others what is possible when one trusts in God. Let's take a few lines from this Psalm:

"Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling. For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone." Psalm 91
As I see it, when you trust in God, you are protected from accidents, disasters or bad luck; "dwelling" could be interpreted as either one's home or one's body. The Psalm is also saying that God will provide for your every need. So I take these words very seriously and for me they are always relevant.

I believe Jesus' ministry offers mankind a shortcut to salvation. Why struggle when the battle over sin, sickness and death has already been won. All you need to do is be born again of the Spirit and believe that the Christ that worked through Jesus 2,000 years is the same yesterday, today and forever. You can, therefore, claim healing and deliverance Now!

In Part 2 of this article, I discuss how one can make use of other aspects of Christ consciousness.

With love,
